When my great-great-great grandfather immigrated from Germany he settled on a farm in Minnesota. The farm could not be kept in the family, much to the deep disappointment of my grandfather. He toiled in a meatpacking plant, but hired himself out to work on farms and dreamed of having a farm of his own. This photograph of my father, grandfather, and great grandfather is overlaid with stony soil from which tiny shoots are beginning to emerge.
