My grandmother was hired out as a teenager to a farming family just a little wealthier than her own in Missouri. She ended up marrying one of the sons on that farm, my grandfather, when she was eighteen and he was thirty-three. Initially, they lived in the barn until he built them a cozy little white house to live in. There was no plumbing or electricity for their family of eight and they subsisted on what they could grow and make for themselves.
