The layered images in this lightbox piece reveal a surreal scene – a girl being buried in an enormous haystack. The teenage girl is my mother, Helen, in a shaky double exposure image. The man pitching hay is her uncle Joe, who worked the farm with her father. I long to know more about my mother’s past, and what formed her character. But finding those answers is now out of my grasp.
