This is a photograph of my maternal great grandmother holding her oldest surviving daughter. A story passed down in our family tells of how she was held hostage at her parent’s home after marrying our great grandfather, a union her own mother didn’t approve of. Pregnant before marriage, it was during that time trapped in her parent’s home that she gave birth to her first child. When she and the child took ill, only she recovered, and her little girl died.
