I first saw this photograph of our maternal grandfather in 2023 when I visited my aunt in Missouri and looked through her treasure trove of family photographs. I was surprised to see several photos in the box of our grandfather with a woman he dated before marrying my grandmother. My aunt explained she had been told that this girlfriend was considered too delicate to be the farm wife he really needed. If he had chosen differently, my sisters and I would not exist.
